About Indian Politics

Talking About Indian Politics, Indian Politics has a long history. The first general election in India was held in 1951 which was won by National Congress which dominated the elections till 1977. India is a Parliamentary democratic republic country in which the President is the head of the state and the prime minister is the head of the government. India has a provision of bicameral Legislature which consists of Upper House, The Rajya Sabha, Lower House, and Lok Sabha. Altogether, there are 543 members in Lok Sabha and 245 members in Rajya Sabha.

Political Parties

Discussing Indian Politics, political parties play a major role in Indian politics. A political party is a group of people having the same ideology. There are different types of political parties and the major ones are National Party and State Party. According to the Election Commission of India, 2598 are the total number of parties among which 8 are national parties, 52 state parties, and 2538 unrecognized parties.

Criteria

National Party

  1. Must Get at least 6% of votes in any four or more states at general election to the House of People.
  2. A party should win 2% of seats in the Lok sabha from at least three different states.

State Party

  1. Must Get at least 6% of votes in the states at general election .
  2. A party should win 2% of seats in the Lok sabha from at least three different states.

Economic Problems

A large portion of India has been suffering from poverty, unemployment. Different political parties are trying to eradicate the unemployment problem from the country. Bharatiya Janata Party Known as BJP encourages a free market economy while Indian National Congress has been moving forward with the slogan Garibi Hatao. The more popular slogan are Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas.

  • Jayaprakash Narayan leads the anti-Emergency movement in 1975.
  • Sixth five-year plan introduced in 1980.
  • Prime minister Indira Gandhi assassinated by two of her Sikh bodyguards in 1984.
  • Outbreak of militancy in Jammu and Kashmir in 1989.
  • The Babri Masjid demolished in 1992.
  • Uttarakhand, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand are formed in 2000.
